Craftsman 42" 19.5hp Drive Belt Replacement

M. DeBlauw I lost my manual and I need to replace my drive belt. Parts in sears.com only gives the parts diagram, but does not tell how to replace it. The new one will not go back on as easily as the old one came off since it was stretched so badly. Any advice, or where can I find an online manual?
DB There is only two different 42" decks for the craftsman. The belts are so close you can't hardly tell a difference. If your belt tensions by means of mechanical linkage then the belt is 144200, If it tensions by means of a cable then the belt is Part # 144959. The belt routing diagram is usually on the deck if you clean of any debris from the top of the deck you will find it. If that doesn't help, e-mail me and I'll try to explain and send a photo or two of deck with a belt installed. Maybe that will help you.

I replaced the drive belt on my 19 horse, 42 inch tractor after I stretched the belt trying to pull a shurb out of the ground (my bad!). Toughest part was getting the belt onto the big wheel/pulley on top of the transaxle. Wear gloves! Those pulleys are sharp!

DB Correction to my previous statement about only two different belts, actually there is a third for the QC Style 42" deck. It would be part # 130969. All three of these units have the belt routed exactly the same configuration, its just that the deck idlers are different. At any rate, the method is the same.

Peter Schuelke My lawnmower raises and lowers via a mechanical linkage. I have no manual, mower given to me from daughter. Does the deck belt ride around the inside edge of the inner left mower pulley, coming from the engine drive, and also, what suggestions do you have for getting the belt around the engine drive pulley?

I'm hoping you just resolved the problem that my local sears store can't seem to fix for 2 weeks now! I've been through 3 different belts (the same one twice because they insisted I was "doing it wrong"), none of them the correct size. the first one they gave me (144959) was way too big, fell off the pulleys...the second (144200) snapped when i engaged the blades. I did some internet research after the local sears rep threw his hands in the air and said "well, just call sears repair to come fix it" yeah right! I'm not going to pay someone $100 to come replace a $20 belt. the craftman belts are expensive enough as it is. the "too big" belt measures 95", the "too small" is 88", and the "medium size" (130969) is 92", I'm hoping that it JUST RIGHT!

Thanks for the tip!
